False Lashes Guide: Styles, Application and Care

Strip, cluster or magnetic? How to pick a lash style for your eye shape, apply it cleanly, and make a pair last beyond one wear.

Choosing a style for your eye shape

Strip lashes are the most popular place to start: one band, applied with adhesive, removed at the end of the day. Natural styles add gentle length for everyday wear, while fuller, winged styles concentrate volume at the outer corner for evenings and photos.

Match the shape to your eyes: almond eyes suit most styles; round eyes usually look best with a winged outer corner; hooded eyes benefit from lift in the centre with a clear band; deep-set eyes show a longer, more curled style best. Our eye-shape guide goes deeper if you want more detail.

Applying them cleanly

Measure every new strip against your lash line and trim from the outer edge — a strip that is too long lifts at the corners and feels uncomfortable all day. Apply a thin line of adhesive, wait until it turns tacky rather than wet, then place the centre of the strip first and press the inner and outer corners into place.

A small mirror held slightly below eye level helps most people place the strip accurately. Finish by pressing your natural lashes gently against the false strip so the two blend, and add mascara only if you need extra blending.

Making a pair last

Care decides whether a pair is worn once or many times. Peel the strip off gently from the outer corner, pick old adhesive off the band with tweezers, and store the pair in its tray so it keeps its curve.

Never sleep in strip lashes, and replace a pair when the band is bent out of shape or fibres start to shed. If your eyes water or feel irritated, remove the lashes and let your eyes rest — comfort always comes first.
