How to Choose the Right Wig: Types, Caps and Care
Synthetic or human hair, lace front or cap — a plain-English UK guide to choosing a wig that fits your life, plus the care basics.
Synthetic or human hair?
Choosing a wig starts with how you will actually wear it. If you want an affordable style you can change often, synthetic wigs are the usual starting point — they hold their style after washing and need little daily work. If you want to heat-style, re-part and treat the hair much like your own, human-hair wigs offer more flexibility, but they need more care and cost more.
Most people do best with a style close to their own hair for a first wig: a familiar length and colour feels natural while you get used to wearing one, and you can experiment with bolder styles later.
Cap types, in plain English
The cap is the part that touches your head, and it decides comfort. Adjustable caps with straps and combs suit most people and can be tightened or loosened through the day. Lace-front caps give a more natural-looking hairline at the front, while a simple machine-made cap is light, breathable and easy for everyday wear.
If you have a sensitive scalp, or little or no hair underneath, look for a soft, smooth cap lining and wear a thin wig cap beneath the wig — it improves comfort, grip and hygiene.
Care basics that make a wig last
A wig lasts longer with gentle handling: brush from the ends upward with a wide, soft brush, wash only when it looks dull or feels heavy with product, and let it dry on a stand away from direct heat. Use heat tools only when the wig is labelled heat-friendly, and always on a low setting.
Store the wig on a stand or in a breathable bag so it keeps its shape, and keep a bonnet or sleep cap for nights if you wear your wig late. Our wig care guide covers the full routine.
